Sunday Showcase: Self-proclaimed “stealth nerd”
Sunday Showcase — By Jami on September 6, 2009 at 9:47 am
Stealth nerd. I like that. I might have to steal that one.
Bubbly, outgoing, stealth nerd seeks a partner and accomplice for adventures in life and love.

37-year-old woman
Relationships: Divorced
Have kids: No
Want kids: Definitely
Religion: Agnostic
Smoke: No Way
Drink: Social Drinker
About me and who I’m looking for
Writing profiles is always a challenge because you never know if you really sound like yourself. What you put down isn’t always how friends would describe you. You don’t get much feedback to know whether you’re stressing the right things. And some words seem silly to include: Honest – who is going to say they lie? Kind – who will say one of their hobbies is kicking puppies? Romantic – isn’t that why we’re here? Do you make it chatty to convey personality? Or list a lot of likes hoping that someone will see something good and not be put off by the next thing? (By now, you probably think I enjoy kicking puppies but won’t admit to it!)
Okay, navel-gazing aside…
I’m energetic, bubbly, and social. I laugh a lot, I tease people I like, I’m a little sarcastic and cynical, but overall I’m an optimist. I love a wacky, dark sense of humor. I usually like risque jokes and I’m not easily offended. I love surprises but can be impatient when you’re leading me on a chase. Curiosity isn’t going to kill this cat, just make her squirm.
I’m a stealth nerd – I don’t look like one, or even act like one, but I’m as happy in a museum as I am out dancing. Lots of things spark my interest and I jump right into new activities. I took an improv class after reading about it in a book. I took one tour with a local group and joined the next day, now I give the tours! I’m very outgoing – I don’t mind doing silly things in public and I’m the one making snarky comments when a line moves slowly. I like to explore – on a tour, I’m the one asking all the questions and wandering away from the group to get a closer look.
I love architecture and engineering. My tastes in art and style tend to run modern and clean. Art fairs are a weakness of mine. I’m handy and crafty (but not how the Beastie Boys would define it). I hacked my Tivo several times, I took my car apart to install a module for the convertible, and I designed and knit a giant glove for a hand-shaped chair (yes, that photo). I’m rather well-versed in pop culture, but often have no idea who is on the cover of People magazine or why. On TV, I like smart comedies and dramas, a dash of sci-fi, and a few documentary-style/reality competition shows. I watch a lot of movies, liking both blockbusters and quirky movies. I can quote many movies and episodes of Friends or classic Simpsons. I read all kinds of things and have a few books going at a time. I usually have music playing, either modern or 80s alternative rock. To get a flavor for my tastes in video, music, and reading, see the lists at the left (although there’s not nearly enough space!). I also love to play games and I play pub trivia weekly.
I prefer the city to the country, I really have to be somewhere urban. I’m not that into sports, but probably do as much outside as I do inside. I’m training for a 60-mile breast cancer walk so I take long walks through rail trails and parks where I also geocache. I dabble in other active things but none regularly, mostly because I like to have a partner.
I’m looking for someone who is passionate about their interests. Being a little nerdy and a little arty is a big plus. Show me new things and come along to try what I like too. Maybe we’ll find new things to enjoy together. I’m proactive in planning, but like to sit back sometimes and let someone else take the wheel. I will also slow down to watch movies on the couch, eating ice cream. Make me laugh, play games with me, and take me on adventures.
If all this appeals to you, the next step is to make contact with me. That can be just as daunting as writing one of these profiles, so I’ll start you off with a little survey… Vanilla or chocolate? Planes, trains, or automobiles? Front or back of the roller coaster? Ninjas, pirates or monkeys? Hope that gets the conversation going.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading.
(No puppies were harmed in writing this profile.)
In my own words
for fun:
Free time, what’s that? I’m too busy doing fun things! I try all kinds of things, gravitate toward movies, trivia games, walking tours. I’m excited about most anything as long as it’s interactive and presented with enthusiasm.
my job:
I’m a research scientist in computer networks. I used to work on a satellite network project until it got cancelled. It sounds exciting but most of the time it means I do a lot of Powerpoint and arguing in meetings.
my ethnicity:
I’m your average midwestern girl, no particular ethnic affiliation or traits. My blonde hair is mostly natural unless I change it, my purple bangs are not.
my religion:
Agnostic is really too strong. I’m not at all religious, but there’s no “none” option. I wouldn’t suit with someone who goes to services with any regularity.
my education:
I went to a liberal arts women’s college for undergrad. I got my graduate degrees in Computer Science at major California university.
favorite hot spots:
I’m a California girl at heart, but I only lived there a few years. I like to be warm – so I curl up in sun puddles with my kittens or piles of blankets in front of a fire. I’m more a city girl than a country type.
favorite things:
TV: Heroes, BSG, HIMYM, Top Chef, Mythbusters, SNL, Jon Stewart. Movies: 12 Monkeys, Little Miss Sunshine, Ironman, Star Trek, The Hangover. Music: Depeche Mode, Cure, U2, Harvey Danger, BNL, TMBG, Death Cab for Cutie, Killers, Mountain Goats.
last read:
Current reads: book of Boston history, something by Malcolm Gladwell, and a trashy novel. Regular websites: IMDb, The Stranger/Slog, CakeWrecks, Toxel. com, iLounge, Indexed, Google Sightseeing.
my pets:
I have two energetic kittens, 9 months old. I have a particular soft spot for felines.
So…What say you? Personally, I want to hang out with her. She had me at “training for a 60-mile breast cancer walk” — that shit is no joke. I respect any woman that is willing to do the 3-Day.
I really, really like this one. I feel like she’s honest and forthright and her pictures have a nice variety. I’m happy with this profile.
Well, except for one thing. I cannot believe DW didn’t get a shout out on. [pout]

Love it! I totally wanna hang out with her and have coffee or something – plus she’s hot! Nice blend of honesty and humor in her profile, too.
I give her two thumbs up. Only (very minor) note is that she says “more city than country” a couple of times, but that might only bother me… repetition isn’t always a bad thing, but it tends to annoy me!

She sounds like a lot of fun! I’d definitely do coffee with her in a heartbeat.
And don’t be too sad about the lack of shout-out…I don’t think I’d fess up to reading it in a personals ad. Might make guys unduly wary of being submitted to Date Wrecks if they screw up.

I like it. It seems straightforward and friendly. It gives the reader an idea of what she is really like without resorting to pretentious or “witty” repartee that only serves to mask one’s true personality. The only thing I might change is all the acronyms or abbreviations or whatever in the favorite things. If it’s important enough to put in the profile, it’s important enough to be spelled out, because “HIMYM” isn’t exactly totally transparent to some folks. But I really think the profile is very open and inviting. The fact that she’s a cat person is simply icing on the proverbial cake. <3 kittehs.

Hi everyone – that’s me. Thanks for the encouragement. I’d love to have coffee with you, I still just can’t seem to find decent guys who want to!
As for the abbreviations, well, Match.com doesn’t give you a lot of characters to work with to convey the things I want to. I had to edit a TON to get it under the limits. Imagine what I left out!! I missed that I talk about urban more than once, I’ll have to go back and fix it.
Sorry for no shout out Jami, but I’m still not convinced that anyone reads my profile, so you’re not missing out. I do give you plenty of viral advertising.
So maybe my real question is whether I should ditch Match for something else. And if so, what should that be?

Lovely woman. With whom can we fix her up? Wonder if nice guy Tad from “crapped in my car” is available.
Amy, we’re rootin’ for ya!

I kind of want to kick her so she will stop being happy.
A little bit bitter, Jane? Why no, of course not!
She’s beautiful, charismatic and intelligent, honestly I have no idea why she would need a profile, seems like she would have no problems getting dates.

I liked it too. I really liked the invitation to contact with some jump start questions, that’s a great idea. But I too was confused by the acronyms for the TV shows and music. I’m guessing she was working with a limited amount of space in that field. While I don’t watch TV I do have a fair sense of what’s on out there in TV land, and I never did figure out what they were.
An no offense James, I’d never post that I was a regular reader of DW on my dating profile either. Although now that I think about it, it might be a great filter, and I’m all about the filters. If someone saw that, came to your site and got pissy or offended, that would be something to be thankful for escaping. Hmmmm. If I ever put up a profile again, I’m going to seriously consider it.
I liked her idea of posting her regular websites – every bit as important as TV/movies/music, if you believe that those things give you insight to a person.
