About me and who I’m looking for
Writing profiles is always a challenge because you never know if you really sound like yourself. What you put down isn’t always how friends would describe you. You don’t get much feedback to know whether you’re stressing the right things. And some words seem silly to include: Honest – who is going to say they lie? Kind – who will say one of their hobbies is kicking puppies? Romantic – isn’t that why we’re here? Do you make it chatty to convey personality? Or list a lot of likes hoping that someone will see something good and not be put off by the next thing? (By now, you probably think I enjoy kicking puppies but won’t admit to it!)
Okay, navel-gazing aside…
I’m energetic, bubbly, and social. I laugh a lot, I tease people I like, I’m a little sarcastic and cynical, but overall I’m an optimist. I love a wacky, dark sense of humor. I usually like risque jokes and I’m not easily offended. I love surprises but can be impatient when you’re leading me on a chase. Curiosity isn’t going to kill this cat, just make her squirm.
I’m a stealth nerd – I don’t look like one, or even act like one, but I’m as happy in a museum as I am out dancing. Lots of things spark my interest and I jump right into new activities. I took an improv class after reading about it in a book. I took one tour with a local group and joined the next day, now I give the tours! I’m very outgoing – I don’t mind doing silly things in public and I’m the one making snarky comments when a line moves slowly. I like to explore – on a tour, I’m the one asking all the questions and wandering away from the group to get a closer look.
I love architecture and engineering. My tastes in art and style tend to run modern and clean. Art fairs are a weakness of mine. I’m handy and crafty (but not how the Beastie Boys would define it). I hacked my Tivo several times, I took my car apart to install a module for the convertible, and I designed and knit a giant glove for a hand-shaped chair (yes, that photo). I’m rather well-versed in pop culture, but often have no idea who is on the cover of People magazine or why. On TV, I like smart comedies and dramas, a dash of sci-fi, and a few documentary-style/reality competition shows. I watch a lot of movies, liking both blockbusters and quirky movies. I can quote many movies and episodes of Friends or classic Simpsons. I read all kinds of things and have a few books going at a time. I usually have music playing, either modern or 80s alternative rock. To get a flavor for my tastes in video, music, and reading, see the lists at the left (although there’s not nearly enough space!). I also love to play games and I play pub trivia weekly.
I prefer the city to the country, I really have to be somewhere urban. I’m not that into sports, but probably do as much outside as I do inside. I’m training for a 60-mile breast cancer walk so I take long walks through rail trails and parks where I also geocache. I dabble in other active things but none regularly, mostly because I like to have a partner.
I’m looking for someone who is passionate about their interests. Being a little nerdy and a little arty is a big plus. Show me new things and come along to try what I like too. Maybe we’ll find new things to enjoy together. I’m proactive in planning, but like to sit back sometimes and let someone else take the wheel. I will also slow down to watch movies on the couch, eating ice cream. Make me laugh, play games with me, and take me on adventures.
If all this appeals to you, the next step is to make contact with me. That can be just as daunting as writing one of these profiles, so I’ll start you off with a little survey… Vanilla or chocolate? Planes, trains, or automobiles? Front or back of the roller coaster? Ninjas, pirates or monkeys? Hope that gets the conversation going.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading.
(No puppies were harmed in writing this profile.)
In my own words
for fun:
Free time, what’s that? I’m too busy doing fun things! I try all kinds of things, gravitate toward movies, trivia games, walking tours. I’m excited about most anything as long as it’s interactive and presented with enthusiasm.
my job:
I’m a research scientist in computer networks. I used to work on a satellite network project until it got cancelled. It sounds exciting but most of the time it means I do a lot of Powerpoint and arguing in meetings.
my ethnicity:
I’m your average midwestern girl, no particular ethnic affiliation or traits. My blonde hair is mostly natural unless I change it, my purple bangs are not.
my religion:
Agnostic is really too strong. I’m not at all religious, but there’s no “none” option. I wouldn’t suit with someone who goes to services with any regularity.
my education:
I went to a liberal arts women’s college for undergrad. I got my graduate degrees in Computer Science at major California university.
favorite hot spots:
I’m a California girl at heart, but I only lived there a few years. I like to be warm – so I curl up in sun puddles with my kittens or piles of blankets in front of a fire. I’m more a city girl than a country type.
favorite things:
TV: Heroes, BSG, HIMYM, Top Chef, Mythbusters, SNL, Jon Stewart. Movies: 12 Monkeys, Little Miss Sunshine, Ironman, Star Trek, The Hangover. Music: Depeche Mode, Cure, U2, Harvey Danger, BNL, TMBG, Death Cab for Cutie, Killers, Mountain Goats.
last read:
Current reads: book of Boston history, something by Malcolm Gladwell, and a trashy novel. Regular websites: IMDb, The Stranger/Slog, CakeWrecks, Toxel. com, iLounge, Indexed, Google Sightseeing.
my pets:
I have two energetic kittens, 9 months old. I have a particular soft spot for felines.
So…What say you? Personally, I want to hang out with her. She had me at “training for a 60-mile breast cancer walk” — that shit is no joke. I respect any woman that is willing to do the 3-Day.
I really, really like this one. I feel like she’s honest and forthright and her pictures have a nice variety. I’m happy with this profile.
Well, except for one thing. I cannot believe DW didn’t get a shout out on. [pout]
